En 1973 el dibujante y humorista Chumy Chúmez publicó la novela gráfica, Chumy Chúmez. Una biografía. A partir de la técnica del collage, recupera grabados del siglo XIX y brinda un explícito homenaje a sus grandes ilustradores. La obra, escrita en los años finales del régimen franquista, requiere ser analizada en el contexto político de su producción, pero también en el sistema literario y artístico de los años 70. De ambas coordenadas surge un relato gráfico que mediante la fragmentación, la elipsis y la sugerencia, interna al lector en el clima moral de la dictadura. The Nineteenth-Century rediscovery of the Oratory of S. Giorgio offers the opportunity to question the conservation methods, historical analysis and creative reception of fourteenth-century painting. This essay reconstructs the historical circumstances of the discovery of Altichiero’s frescoes and the consequent discussions among connoisseurs concerning the autography and the cultural value of the same. The period predating and overlapping with World War II saw psychoanalytic authors respond to the authoritarian and fascist developments in Europe through scholarly and analytical writings. These authors, sometimes referenced as ‘political Freudians’, were interested in bringing psychoanalysis in a dialogue with progressive social and pedagogical movements of their times, focusing their critique on the persecutory, eliminatory and purificatory fantasies, which they saw as animating the fascistic movements in Europe. The relativism of values (Werterelativismus) is a problem very central for the historicism debate, which concerned historians and phi- losophers at the beginning of the twentieth century. In 12th-century German literature, a number of texts stands out, usually grouped under the heading 'Spielmannsdichtung' or 'Spielmannsepos', and which were characterised by a mixture of heroic, historical, legendary and courtly traits. Among such works is the epic Herzog Ernst (ca. 1180), which – along with other things - contains the story of an adventurous journey of his hero to a fabulous Orient inhabited by wondrous peoples and monstrous creatures. This paper explores how the epos and particularly the episode of the crane-men contribute to the creation of the image of the Orient in medieval German literature.
